How Local Card Shows Are Fueling Student Success

The hobby has been in a remarkably healthy place for a long time. New shops continue to open across the state, and most weekends give us half a dozen shows to choose from. But tucked between the big convention‑center events and the busy mall circuits are shows with a different purpose — fundraiser card shows. They remind us that this community isn’t just about collecting; it’s about showing up for one another.

Two standout examples are the Shakopee AVID Card Show and the NorthStar Card Show Fundraiser in Champlin, both supporting AVID programs at their local high schools. AVID — Advancement Via Individual Determination — is a college‑readiness program that helps motivated students build the skills, habits, and confidence needed for advanced classes and post‑secondary success. Through a structured elective, students learn organization, note‑taking, inquiry, collaboration, and critical reading and writing — the kind of foundational tools that help them thrive in rigorous coursework.

For many schools, AVID becomes a true support system. Students receive mentoring, participate in small‑group tutorials, visit college campuses, and get guidance on applications, financial aid, and career pathways. It’s especially impactful for students in the academic middle — those with the drive to succeed who benefit from extra structure, encouragement, and someone firmly in their corner.

That’s why shows like these matter. When dealers set up a table or collectors stop by as customers, they’re directly supporting a program that opens doors, builds confidence, and helps students imagine a bigger future.

Last fall, Hayley and Ahmed Hassan and Xia Thao launched the NorthStar Card Show Fundraiser, raising more than $5,000 for Champlin Park’s AVID program. Champlin Park teacher Meng Yang captured the heart of the program perfectly: “These are some of the best students — they work hard, have empathy, are critical thinkers, are positive members of the community, and deserve an opportunity to continue their learning and education beyond high school.” Many of those same students volunteered at the show, proving Meng’s words true.

The first Shakopee AVID Card Show takes place this Saturday, April 11th. Led by Shakopee students, the event raises money for college tours. As of this writing, 37 tables are already sold, and there are giveaways for the first 100 kids — it’s shaping up to be a fun, high‑energy day.

The next NorthStar Card Show Fundraiser in Champlin follows on Saturday, May 9th. Contact information for both events is available in the flyers below. If you’re able, consider supporting these shows. Even a short visit or a small donation helps fuel programs that genuinely change students’ lives.
